PROJECT 365 was a challenge to complete and publicly release 365 tracks within the year of 2014.

Beginning with participation in the 2014 Weeklybeats Challenge, I initially wanted to set a weekly goal for the purpose of practicing improvisation and soon found the process of experimenting, recording and learning how to use Ableton Live extremely rewarding. Since then I have experimented with different techniques on different sized flutes, layered, looped, and stretched sounds, turned recordings of my pet rabbits into sound art and collaborated with artists both in Australia and overseas.

Day 258, Tracks 85 – 101

It’s been nearly 3 months since my last post, and while I’ve been quite busy recently I was unable to play for sometime due to illness. I’ve managed to develop severe asthma and am having trouble playing for more than a couple of hours per day, and even then anything that demands a lot of air will send me to bed for the next day. I’ve been exploring Salvatore Sciarrino’s flute techniques which are often very soft, rarely exceeding pp. I’ve also been using a Max for Live device called SDMAS (Spectral Domain Microsound Amplification Software) care of Vince Giles (www.vgiles.net), as well as Ableton Live affects and processes.

With a lot of luck I’ll be able to complete this challenge by the end of the year, but as I had such a major set-back (not to mention starting late) I may extend it to March 2015.

Enjoy!

The Fourth Day

Flute improv processed with @vince-giles‘ S-DAS (Spectral-Domain Amplification Software – Max for Live).  This patch is still in beta but aims to amplify the microsonic aspects of anything that passes through it, e.g. making the softer partials of the flute louder in real time. It doesn’t quite work just yet, but it’s fun to play with anyway!

Pigeon In A Fishbowl
