PROJECT 365 was a challenge to complete and publicly release 365 tracks within the year of 2014.

Beginning with participation in the 2014 Weeklybeats Challenge, I initially wanted to set a weekly goal for the purpose of practicing improvisation and soon found the process of experimenting, recording and learning how to use Ableton Live extremely rewarding. Since then I have experimented with different techniques on different sized flutes, layered, looped, and stretched sounds, turned recordings of my pet rabbits into sound art and collaborated with artists both in Australia and overseas.

OgMog

Collaboration with Vincent Giles, again featuring the Transmoglifier and Drone (Max for Live). OgMog. Click.

Day 78, Tracks 13-17

Friday

Bass and C flute improvisation.

The Tibetan Yak

Material taken from yesterday’s recording, Friday, chopped a little and mixed with chorus. Yak music.

U8

Samples from a 2 hour recording of my backyard. I left my Zoom outside hoping to hear something of what my pet rabbits get up to when I’m not around. They were very quiet, but I did manage to catch a lot of bird song as well as planes, trains and neighbours’ conversations… You can also hear me playing from inside the house. I hope you enjoy it more than the baby next door did.

Words Will Break Cement

Collaboration with Tate Carson (New Orleans) as part of the 2014 Weeklybeats challenge http://weeklybeats.com/#/tatecarson Material taken from a previous track Gulls.

Mogmog

Collaboration with sound artist Vincent Giles (Melbourne). Improvisation using key clicks processed by a Transmoglifier (multiband frequency shifter created in Max for Live).

Day 64, Track 11

Chirp.

Using the same whistle tone material as yesterday (unfocussed only), I’ve stretched and layered samples that sound a little like birds.

Here is an indication of just how quiet these sounds are:

Somewhere in there is a waveform.

Day 64, Track 10

Yesterday I decided that I should extend my participation in the Weeklybeats challenge (http://weeklybeats.com/#/faux+foe) to writing and recording a track not just every week, but every day. As we’re already into the third month of the year, I’ve got a bit of catching up to do! 365 recordings in 365 days. That leaves me with 355 tracks to do in 302 days….. No worries. 🙂

Today’s track, Whistle Tones features whistle tones. Surprising, I know. I recorded each whistle tone separately starting at low B and focussing on the 3 lowest harmonics, moving chromatically to F#. I also recorded a few unfocused whistle tones to fill out the sound, and because I like the rhythms that they create.

Realised in Ableton Live.
